Shanghai authorities have announced an expansion of their "night tourism" program, which has been a hallmark of the city for several years. In 2025, the project will include new routes along the Bund, evening cruises on the Huangpu River, and light shows on the skyscrapers of the Pudong financial district. Additionally, night markets focusing on gastronomy and handicrafts will open, as well as cultural festivals that will take place during the summer season.
According to the city's Department of Culture and Tourism, more than 12000000 tourists visited nightlife destinations in 2024, with that number expected to rise to 15000000 in 2025. Authorities note that the development of nightlife tourism not only helps increase revenue for the hotel and restaurant industry but also creates new jobs.
Particular attention is being paid to security: additional surveillance cameras have been installed in areas with large tourist concentrations, and patrols have been increased. Authorities also plan to introduce digital services for booking tickets and paying for services via mobile apps, making attending events more convenient for foreign tourists.
