Hainan Island is set to see record growth in foreign tourist arrivals in 2025, thanks to the expansion of its visa-free entry program and an increase in direct flights. According to the provincial tourism department, over 180000 foreign tourists visited the island in the first two months of the year alone, a 35 percent increase compared to last year.
Particular attention is being paid to the development of ecotourism and sustainable resorts. New hotel complexes powered by solar energy and using water purification technologies are opening along the Sanya coast. Tourists are offered combined itineraries: beach holidays, excursions to tropical forests, and visits to Li and Miao ethnic villages.
Hainan authorities also announced the launch of a "smart tourism" program: tourists can now use a single digital app to book hotels, purchase museum tickets, and book transfers. This aims to improve convenience and reduce language barriers for foreign visitors.
The economic impact of tourism is already noticeable: industry revenues for January–February exceeded 12 billion yuan, and are projected to reach 80 billion by the end of the year.
