Maldivian authorities have announced the launch of a development program for the southern atolls, including Addu and Gaafu. Three new premium resorts and a network of diving centers aimed at experienced divers are planned.

The Southern Atolls are less crowded than the popular North Male and offer unique opportunities:
– diving with whale sharks and manta rays;
– exploration of sunken ships;
- ethnotourism on local islands.

Experts believe that the development of the southern atolls will redistribute tourist flow and reduce the burden on the central regions.
