The Solovetsky Archipelago, located in the western White Sea, consists of six islands with a total area of over 300 square kilometers. They were inhabited in the 5th century BC, but the earliest evidence of human habitation dates back to the 3rd-2nd millennia BC. Beginning in the 15th century, the islands became the site of the founding and active development of the largest monastery in the Russian North. Several churches dating from the 16th to 19th centuries are also located here.
