According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, nearly 5 billion domestic tourist trips were made in the country in the first three quarters of 2025, an 18% increase compared to the same period last year. Total domestic tourist spending amounted to 4,85 trillion yuan (approximately US$684 billion), an 11,5% increase year-on-year.

Urban residents remain the main driver of domestic tourism: they made nearly 3,8 billion trips, and their spending reached 4,05 trillion yuan. However, the growth in interest from rural residents is particularly noteworthy: the number of their trips increased by 25%, and their spending increased by 24%.

Experts note that the growth in domestic tourism is linked to improved transport infrastructure, the development of high-speed rail, and the promotion of cultural routes. More and more Chinese are choosing to travel to historic cities, national parks, and resorts within the country, reducing pressure on international travel and stimulating regional economic development.
