Since June 2024, Venice has become the first European city to introduce an entrance fee for day-trip tourists. The ticket price is €5. This measure was adopted after years of debate about the city's congestion: Venice receives over 20 million visitors annually, ten times the local population. Authorities explained that the goal is to reduce pressure on infrastructure, preserve cultural heritage, and improve the quality of life for residents. Initial results showed an 8% decrease in the number of day-trip visits, while the number of tourists staying in the city for several days increased.
